    The "South African" Office

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX_7w2NErQI&w=500&h=307&rel=0] 10 minute rip-off of successful BBC TV series, “The Office,” for a local Youtube humor channel, NotOnTV.  Little different from the original, with a few nods to local conditions. Also mildly funny in parts with good production values. Opinions? — Sean Jacobs

Day 2 and 3 Ear Plugs

After watching Bafana Bafana’s close shave against Mexico on TV, my brother, David, and I went off to see France vs Uruguay at the new Cape Town Stadium. In short: imposing, massive structure.  We had really good seats. 8 rows back from the field on the halfway line. (We bought tickets made available after cancellations.) […]

    Africa really is a country

While everybody back home in South Africa today celebrated Vuvuzela Day, the rest of us had to find something else with which to show our support for our local team – like a T-shirt, for example. So thankfully the UK sports chain Decathlon had shirts on sale for those football supporters who really believe that, […]

    On Safari

By the time you read this I’ll be on my way to Cape Town, via Amsterdam. I am looking forward to the World Cup as a fan. I’ve grown very tired of the kind of images and debates circulating about the World Cup here in the US or what travels. (The last straw was a […]

Africa is a Country @ Twitter

The World Cup is 3 days away. So everybody is writing, blogging, speaking, filming and broadcasting from or about Africa (well, specifically South Africa, but it does not stop them from making generalizations about 53 countries and territories). Of course, things will calm down we know in a few days when the media realizes that […]

        Not Julius Malema's Youth League

[slideshow] I’ve blogged before (at my old blog address) about the Johannesburg fashion movement, The Smarteez. (More exclusive than the mass outlet Amakipkip.) Now Dazed Magazine have discovered them. For its June special “South Africa” issue (Africans still get “special issue” status everywhere), the magazine’s editors sent a writer and photographer to profile the designers. […]

        Iman is fierce

The achievements of the Somali model and designer, Iman, in a very racist fashion industry, particularly Paris and New York, should be widely celebrated.

          "We’re Cool Like That"

Last week I got an email from a reader,  Sojourner Ahebee , 14 years old, originally fron Cote d’Ivoire, now living in the United States. Turns out she’s a big fan of Africa is a Country. That’s a good start. (Sojourner has her own blog, a culture blog for teens of color called Sojo’s Trumpet.) […]

          Has Nandos lost the plot?

The South African fast food chicken chain Nando’s (which has of late also become very popular in Britain) has always been known for their good adverts. They usually manage to combine a quick-off-the-mark, topical sense of the news with a particularly South African brand of wit and irony. Take for instance their ads featuring Julius […]

          Africa on Film: Tarzan!

Few other authors in the 19th and 20th centuries made greater contributions to Hollywood’s racist images of Africa than Edgar Rice Burroughs – Tarzan’s creator. During his lifetime, Burroughs mastered the staple “jungle” movie that has characterized films set in Africa since the early part of the 20th century. The scope of Burrough’s “Africa” work […]
